Tragedy mars opening weekend for NHL
Evans and fellow crew members in happier times Thoughts and prayers go out this morning to the crew and family members of Newman Haas Lanigan Racing, following the loss of long time mechanic Davey Evans. Evans, who worked on Graham Rahal's Hole in the Wall crew, (and who can be seen in the dark shirt standing behind DaMatta in the accompanying photo) was killed Saturday night following a violent altercation while out with fellow crewmen in Indianapolis.

Although details are still being sorted out, it appears that members of the team went out for a social evening to a local watering hole, and were confronted by a group of young men known for starting trouble for the "fun" of it. It is being reported that Evans, 63, succumbed to massive head injuries suffered during the unprovoked attack. According to sources, all three instigators are in custody, and the incident is being treated as a homicide. An autopsy is reportedly being performed today to determine the exact cause of death.

At this time, memorial/funeral plans have not released.

The crew, who were informed early Sunday morning of the tragic news, discussed not running that day, but ultimately went forward with Rookie Orientation as it was felt it was what Davey would have wanted. Remarked a crew member "it's racing, it's what we do"

The entire OpenWheelWorld.net team wishes to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Mr.Evans and everyone at Newman Haas Lanigan Racing during this difficult time.
