Driver Dan Wheldon Killed in Lap 11 Crash in Las Vegas

It is with tremendous sadness and regret that we report that driver Dan Wheldon, 33, died after a lap 11 crash in turns one and two. A 15-car pileup ensued when Wade Cunningham spun in front of J.R. Hildebrand. Wheldon was one of four drivers who got airborne, the other three Will Power, Pippa Mann, and Hildebrand. Those three suffered minor injuries.

Wheldon had won his second Indy 500 earlier this year and was rumored to be close to announcing a return to Andretti Autosport as a replacement for Danica Patrick in the Go Daddy sponsored machine.

Please keep Wheldon, his wife Susie, and their two sons, Sebastian and Oliver, and the rest of the Wheldon family in your thoughts and prayers.

In his memory, the race has been cancelled and the drivers ran a 5-lap salute in honor of their fallen friend.
