Though they all gave it a valiant effort regardless, just based on the practices coming into this session it was a given that this would be a Penske party. And while we were all invited to the dance, it would be one of the Captain's drivers wearing the crown. That driver? Helio Castroneves. And unlike his last pole effort, he gets to keep this one...

Here's how the day unfolded...

Round 1 - Group 1:
12 Will Power
2 Josef Newgarden
28 Ryan Hunter-Reay
8 Max Chilton
15 Graham Rahal
27 Marco Andretti

14 Carlos Munoz
98 Alexander Rossi
18 Esteban Gutierrez
7 Mikhail Aleshin

No incidents, just straight up getting laps in.

Biggest Winner: Aleshin. Sure he's last, and didn't advance to round 2, but he's here, in a car, racing this weekend. Something that was in doubt at this time yesterday.

Round 1 - Group 2:
1 Simon Pagenaud
3 Helio Castroneves
9 Scott Dixon
83 Charlie Kimball
19 Ed Jones
5 James Hinchcliffe

20 Spencer Pigot
10 Tony Kanaan
21 JR Hildebrand
26 Takuma Sato
4 Conor Daly

Again, no incidents, just flat out qualifying.

Biggest Winner: Ed Jones continues to impress, especially great result considering both Kanaan and Sato are on the outside looking in.

Biggest Loser: Kanaan. The only of the Ganassi cars to not advance. According to him it wasn't an issue of blocking or track position, proclaiming "we just sucked" after the session.

Round 2
3 Helio Castroneves
2 Josef Newgarden
12 Will Power
1 Simon Pagenaud
9 Scott Dixon
15 Graham Rahal

8 Max Chilton
27 Marco Andretti
5 James Hinchcliffe
83 Charlie Kimball
19 Ed Jones
5 Ryan Hunter-Reay

Biggest Winner: Rahal who snuck in to break up the Penske/Ganassi party

Biggest Loser: No losers here really. This was a tough, tight group. The competition is so high this season, that everyone who makes it to the second round is a winner.

Firestone Fast 6

3 Helio Castroneves
12 Will Power
2 Josef Newgarden
1 Simon Pagenaud
9 Scott Dixon
15 Graham Rahal

As expected, it was a battle between the Penskes, with Will Power looking like he had it in the bag, right up until the final lap, with Power sitting on pitlane, Castroneves managed to eek past his prolifically pole-winning teammate by 0.0604, to grab his equally prolific 50th career pole, in hopes of capturing his first win here at the historic Road America.
