Chaves Surprises With the Quick Lap on Day 4

Dale Coyne Racing took its turn at the front of the field on Thursday, with Gabby Chaves leading the way with a quick lap of 227.961 mph. "It's only practice but it feels pretty good," said Chaves, last year's Rookie of the Year. "It's my first time at the top of the charts here at IMS in an Indy car. Just pleased with the work the team has been doing, very pleased with the performance that Honda has been putting out as well. Overall I think we've got a pretty strong package." Following Chaves were fellow Honda drivers Townsend Bell, Carlos Munoz, and Conor Daly, while Charlie Kimball was the fastest overall Chevy in fifth.

However, with qualifying looming, the focus began shifting to running without traffic and turning having a quick "non-tow speed." Removing tows, Will Power had the fast lap at 225.381 mph. "We had some good runs out there today," Power explained. "We definitely made some gains and have a little bit more to go, as we're still making adjustments for the coming days. I'm pretty confident that the Verizon Chevrolet will be in good shape for qualifying. Other top non-tow speeds came from Graham Rahal, Scott Dixon, Juan Montoya, and Alexander Rossi.
