Jones was joined at the top of the charts by stout rookie Felix Rosenqvist, who is testing with Belardi Auto Racing this week. Rosenqvist, the reigning FIA European Formula 3 champion, was the only other driver over the course of the day to set a lap time in the 1 minute, 14 second range, just 0.17 seconds slower than Jones. Fellow sophomores RC Enerson of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and Jones’ Carlin Racing teammate Felix Serralles were in the top five at the end of the day, as was Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires champion Santiago Urrutia. Urrutia, who has yet to be confirmed with a team at this time, was quickest at the halfway point of the afternoon session and logged 54 laps in the #77 SPM entry.
Kyle Kaiser led the charge for Juncos Racing, slotting into sixth, just ahead of Belardi’s Zach Veach, who turned the most laps on the day with 90 tours of the South Florida road course. Juncos’s rookie driver, Zachary Claman De Melo, was fourth in the morning session but slipped back to eighth in the afternoon, while Shelby Blackstock was an impressive second in the morning for Andretti Autosport but could barely improve his time in the afternoon and finished ninth. Neil Alberico turned 73 laps on his Indy Lights debut for Carlin Racing, acclimating himself to his new ride and ending the day tenth, just ahead of Andretti’s rookie driver Dalton Kellett.
The Indy Lights field returns to action tomorrow for two more test sessions.
