Buret Earns First Victory in Race 2

Timothe Buret of Juncos Racing became the fourth different winner of the young Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires season, claiming an emphatic first win in the series over the fiercest of competitors. Buret started from pole and ran a relatively uncontested race at the front of the field, holding Florian Latorre at bay for the duration of the 20-lap event and winning by a more comfortable than it sounds gap of 0.798 seconds.

With championship points leader Neil Alberico of Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing starting back in tenth position, the top five starters all knew they had a chance to make up some ground in the championship. While Buret and Latorre were steady at the front, it was a bit more frantic further back in the field. Latorre—who was upside down in the gravel in yesterday’s first race—was able to get past Santiago Urrutia at the start. Meanwhile, Urrutia would have the tough task of holding off Weiron Tan for a majority of the race, once Tan made the pass on Juncos Racing’s Will Owen. Tan would eventually pressure Urrutia late in the race, but Urrutia would claim the final spot on the podium.

Owen and the other two Juncos drivers would end up embroiled in the most entertaining battle of the day late in the race. As Victor Franzoni, making his first Pro Mazda start for M1 Racing, sliced past the Juncos cars and into fifth, that left the three teammates to battle for the sixth, seventh, and eighth places. Garret Grist, Jose Gutierrez, and Owen would all mix it up with one another over the last several laps, with the three coming home safely in that order. Team owner Ricardo Juncos will likely have breathed quite the sigh of relief that he claimed a win and brought all four cars home unscathed after announcing plans for a brand new Juncos Technology Center in Speedway, Indiana.

Buret claimed the honors on the day but Urrutia is provisionally the new championship leader after this afternoon’s race. Can Alberico reclaim his points advantage in tomorrow’s Race 3? Find out when the green flag drops at 12:15 p.m. ET.
