Jake Eidson Tops Both Friday USF2000 Practice Sessions

Jake Eidson endured heartache during the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda WinterFest when a fuel pump failure robbed him of an almost certain championship. With the start of the full championship, though, Eidson is back on top and loving life as he was the quickest driver in both of Friday’s practice sessions in his #22 Pabst Racing machine. Fellow title favorites and Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing drivers Aaron Telitz and Nico Jamin rounded out the top three on the timesheets.

Friday morning’s practice session began just as the sun was rising, with the streets of St. Petersburg still damp from a heavy overnight rain. There were no major incidents in the session, as Eidson topped Afterburner Autosport’s Victor Franzoni, Jamin, Telitz, and John Cummiskey Racing’s Anthony Martin.

The second practice session began under the threat of rain, and the field was quick to get down to work to maximize their on-track running. Just after the halfway point, the rain began to fall and that was the end of usable running for the field. It was good news for Eidson, though, as he was fastest when the precipitation started, ahead of Telitz, Jamin, Martin, and Franzoni. The theme of the day, as it was during the Cooper Tires WinterFest races, was the domination of the veterans. Eidson, Jamin, Franzoni, and Telitz were all frontrunners last season and returned to the front again today. Their dominance was interrupted—as it was at NOLA and Barber—by John Cummiskey Racing. Today, though, it was Martin—and not his teammate and fellow Australian rookie Jordan Lloyd—who played spoiler in the top five.

Tomorrow morning the USF2000 drivers will be on-track at 8 a.m. ET for qualifying, followed by the first of this weekend’s doubleheader races rolling off around 10:15 a.m. ET.
